TAPA Athletics Policies and Procedures
TAPA is a part of the RI Interscholastic League (RIIL) allowing our high school students to participate in athletics at a member high school in the community in which they reside. In addition to the policies and procedures shared with each student-athlete by their coach, TAPA has outlined the following policies to ensure that students are successful both in the classroom and on the field/court. In accordance with RIIL guidelines, a school may enforce their own participation and eligibility policies that may be stricter but not more lenient than those of the league or the member school. In the event that there are multiple policies governing an act, the more strict rule must be followed. It is our hope that with the following policies in conjunction with those of our member schools, we will produce student athletes who are well rounded and disciplined and ready to complete academically and athletically.
Participation-
Central high school regularly welcomes TAPA students to try out for their sports teams prior to the start of each athletic season. Students may stop by the Athletic Coordinator’s (Ms. Sweeney-Ashby) office during advisory or after school to retrieve a sports packet. The Central High School sports packet should be completed by the student and their guardian and returned to the coach on the first day of try out. All students must have a current physical (less than one year old) which should also be submitted. Students will not be allowed to step onto the field/court without a physical. In the event that a student has an existing relationship with a coach at another Providence public school and they wish to play for them, they may do so with the expressed permission of the coach and athletic director of that school. All coaches must email TAPA’s athletic coordinator at the start of the season to confirm participation and eligibility.
Early Dismissal-
In the event of an early game, students may receive an early dismissal at the time requested by their coach. In order to be excused for games, students must submit a season schedule to the Athletic Coordinator at the start of the season. Day-of requests for early dismissal by the student will not be granted without a full season schedule on file. In the event of a last minute update and the need for early dismissal, the student’s coach must contact TAPA’s Athletic Coordinator to request the student’s release. All approved early dismissals are excused and students may make up missed work in accordance with TAPA’s excused absence policy (see student handbook). It is the responsibility of the student to obtain any missed work and failure to do so may put the student’s eligibility at risk. TAPA does not grant early dismissal for daily practices.
Academic Eligibility
In order to be eligible for participation in sports students must be failing no more than 1 of their classes at each grade reporting period (the 1st and 15th of every month). Students who are failing one class must attend tutoring in order to continue play. In the event that a student is failing two or more classes or they do not attend mandatory tutoring, the student will be temporarily ineligible for athletics. As this is reviewed twice monthly, the student may regain eligibility at the next grade reporting period. When students are ineligible for participation, the Athletic Coordinator will notify the student, parent, and coach.
RIIL Requires that students have passed at least 60% of their courses during the previous academic quarter in order to be eligible for the season. This Eligibility is confirmed with TAPA’s Athletic Coordinator by the member school at the start of each season.
Attendance Eligibility-
Students must maintain a good attendance record in order to participate in athletics. Students with a.) 3 or more unexcused absences or b.) 5 or more unexcused latenesses will be ineligible for participation in athletics. Students will be given one opportunity per quarter to regain eligibility by “recovering time” in tutoring. Students must meet the expectations of the teacher(s) in an agreement made between the student, teacher, Dean of Students, and the Athletic Coordinator. When students are ineligible for participation, the Athletic Coordinator will notify the student, parent, and coach.
Attendance Prior to a Game/Competition/Practice-
Students must attend all classes on the day of an athletic activity in order to participate. Students who are absent or miss one or more full period will not be able to attend the game/competition/practice that day. Violation of this rule will result in eligibility for the season. Coaches will be notified by TAPA’s Athletic Coordinator if a student did not meet the attendance requirement for the day.
